Tibet, 1989. A monk wanders through the ruins of the Ganden monastery, east of Lhasa. A center of Buddhist learning for centuries, the sprawling temple complex was destroyed by Chinese rockets and foot soldiers during the Cultural Revolution. Even today, pilgrims will endure a difficult climb through the Himalayan foothills to visit the site.
“It's a very sad place, but you occasionally find seeds of hope, which I think is the situation inside Tibet today.”— L.R.
